Calling for key Ipperwash Inquiry recommendations to be implemented

On Friday, it will have been 29 years since Dudley George was shot and killed by an OPP officer during a protest at Ipperwash Provincial Park.

To mark the anniversary, the Anishinabek Nation is calling on the province to commit to implementing key recommendations from the Ipperwash Inquiry in 2007.

“We are putting the Government of Ontario on notice that we need to see movement on these recommendations before the 30th anniversary in 2025,” Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief Linda Debassige. “We look forward to hearing from Ontario Premier Doug Ford on his commitment to implement these recommendations in the spirit of reconciliation.”

100 recommendations were made in the inquiry report with several identified by the Anishinabek Nation for immediate implementation.

Among other things, they include establishing an independent agency to facilitate and oversee the settling of land and treaty claims in Ontario, working with First Nations to develop co-management arrangements and resource-sharing initiatives and establishing an Ontario First Nation Reconciliation Fund.

The Anishinabek Nation also says the Ontario Provincial Police has addressed 25 policing recommendations but has yet to implement them.
