Tourism officials touting ‘staycations’ during trade war

Amid U.S. tariff announcements, tourism officials in the north are not only welcoming visitors from across the globe they’re promoting the region to northerners.   

Destination Northern Ontario says regardless of ongoing trade discussions, tourism is a resilient economic driver for the region and the province. 

“Northern Ontario’s doors are wide open to travelers from all corners of the world,” said David MacLachlan, Executive Director. “We are proud of our unique experiences, from breathtaking natural landscapes to vibrant urban communities. We remain committed to providing exceptional hospitality and ensuring that every visitor feels welcome and safe.” 

The organization says it not only committed to supporting the tourism sector amid tariffs but is also launching campaigns to promote travel within domestic, transborder, and international markets.

These efforts encourage travelers to embrace “staycations” and support local businesses.  

“A staycation in Northern Ontario not only provides a fantastic getaway but also directly contributes to the livelihoods of local tourism operators and strengthens our communities,” says MacLachlan.  

Along with increased marketing efforts, the organization is offering training programs to tourism operators diversify their markets, advocating for government support for the sector, investing in tourism product development, and tracking trends in visits and spending.  

Destination Northern Ontario’s coverage area extends from the North Bay area west to the Manitoba border.
