Nipissing West OPP: driver charged in New Year’s Day fatal

Nipissing West OPP says they have laid charges that stem from a fatal collision on New Year’s Day.

Police say the crash happened around 8:50 a.m. when a vehicle in the westbound lanes of Highway 17, near the Highway 144 turnoff near Sudbury left the road and hit a rock-cut.

Officers say the crash claimed the lives of Destiny Osagie, age 11, Flourish Osagie, age 10 at the scene. A third, Britney Osagie, age 6, was transported to the hospital before she succumbed to her injuries.

Officials say another passenger, a 10-year-old suffered life-altering injuries and is still in the hospital in Toronto. A 45-year-old female in the front passenger seat suffered minor injuries, while the driver, a 46-year-old woman was left uninjured.

After the investigation, the OPP say the driver, a resident of Toronto, has been charged with:

  • Careless Driving Causing Death (three counts)
  • Careless Driving Causing Bodily Harm

Police say she will appear before court in Sudbury on June 6.
