Nipissing’s Digital ID initiative has earned the university national accolades for innovation.
The post-secondary institution has won the Canadian University Council of Chief Information Officers Innovation Award.
Officials say under the initiative, traditional plastic student ID cards are replaced with a digital alternative, significantly reducing plastic waste and streamlining campus operations.
The digital cards, which were rolled out to students last fall, also serve as a North Bay Transit pass.
Plans are to expand the program to faculty and staff in the future.
“We are beyond proud of this accomplishment,” says Heather Hersemeyer, Director of Technology Services at Nipissing University. “Our Digital ID initiative not only enhances convenience for our students, staff, and faculty, but also aligns with our commitment to sustainability.”
The award was presented at the 2024 Canadian Higher Education Information Technology Conference held last month in Halifax, NS.
